Abstract
This paper will develop and theorize design strategies of two recent reused projects of Rennes.The first one, the new satellite Museum of Fine Arts in the Maurepas district, designed by Titan office. This project is part of a profound urban transformation of a modern 1960s neighbourhood designed by Jean Gerard Carré. This project has a strong political mission: bringing culture to the city’s disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The project transforms the ground floor of the 1960s housing bar called “La Banane” into the second site of the Rennes Museum of Fine Arts, kindergarden and Community Center.
The second project is the new cultural center St. Helier, designed by the Guinée Potin office. This project reuses the former St. Helier Brewery, the only remaining building from this industrial past, to convert it into a cultural and experimental center.
These two projects, carried out in a relatively close period, illustrate, in our opinion, two ways of transforming the ordinary heritage of our cities, which is one of the major topics to be addressed in the architectural discipline today.
This article will retrace and analyse them in a comparative manner, using the comparative architecture analysis method described by Professor M. Marià and S. Musquera in their article “learning by comparing.”
