Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary outcomes of a design research in Morano Calabro, a hill town in Calabria, southern Italy, where accessibility and depopulation intersect as the main obstacles for a widespread reuse of the historical centre. Within the broader Ri_AbitareMorano project1, coordinated by the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Calabria in collaboration with the municipality, ongoing research investigates how diffuse design strategies and mechanised mobility can re-enable inhabitation in areas that have remained physically and socially detached. Combining urban analysis, participatory processes, and typological experimentation, the study reinterprets the urban morphology of Morano to identify new forms of light, reversible, and context-specific ways to ascent the historical centre. These devices, together with micro-infrastructures for parking and services, form a strategy for the widespread reuse of an otherwise hard-to-reach heritage, turning accessibility into an architectural and social driver of regeneration.
